Playstation's June 2026 State of Play delivered one of the strongest showcases the company has hosted in recent memory. While there were plenty of trailers, updates, and surprises packed into the presentation, a handful of games stood above the rest and left me genuinely excited for what's ahead.
From long-awaited sequels to brand-new gameplay reveals, these were the announcements that caught my attention the most.
Marvel's Wolverine Finally Shows Its Claws
After years of waiting, we finally got an extended look at Marvel's Wolverine, and it immediately looked like one of PlayStation's biggest releases of the year.
The gameplay footage showed Logan battling through a militia compound while attempting to rescue a group of young mutants. Right away, what stood out was how fluid everything looked. Wolverine moves with incredible speed and aggression, darting between enemies, climbing through environments, and tearing through opponents with brutal efficiency.
Visually, the game looked stunning. The environments were vibrant and detailed, with impressive lighting and large-scale set pieces throughout the trailer. Every encounter felt cinematic without losing the feeling of player control.
The combat also appears to be exactly what fans hoped for. Wolverine's claws feel impactful, attacks look vicious, and the overall presentation captures the savage nature of the character better than almost any previous video game adaptation.
As if that wasn't enough, the trailer also teased several familiar faces from the X-Men universe. Jean Grey made a surprise appearance, while brief flashes hinted at additional mutant characters that fans will undoubtedly spend the next several months dissecting frame by frame.
With a September 15, 2026 release date and pre-orders already live, Wolverine instantly became one of my most anticipated games of the year.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Looks Like a Massive Return for Lara Croft
Crystal Dynamics brought Lara Croft back into the spotlight with Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a game that appears to both reimagine the classic Atlantis storyline and continue the modern Tomb Raider narrative.
The reveal trailer showcased gorgeous environments, ancient ruins, and some truly impressive action sequences. The visuals alone were enough to grab attention, but the setting may be the most exciting part of all.
One of the biggest surprises was seeing Lara running through environments populated by dinosaurs. It's a callback longtime fans immediately recognized and suggests the developers aren't afraid to embrace some of the more adventurous and supernatural elements from Tomb Raider's history.
The game appears to blend modern cinematic storytelling with classic Tomb Raider exploration and mystery. If Crystal Dynamics can successfully balance those two elements, this could end up being one of Lara's strongest adventures yet.
Legacy of Atlantis launches February 12, 2027, and with Tomb Raider Catalyst also scheduled to arrive later in 2027. It's shaping up to be a huge year for the franchise.
Silent Hill: Townfall Continues to Build Intrigue
Silent Hill: Townfall didn't show a massive amount of gameplay, but it didn't need to.
The trailer leaned heavily into atmosphere, mystery, and psychological horror, creating exactly the type of uneasy feeling fans expect from the Silent Hill series. Every shot seemed intentionally designed to make viewers uncomfortable.
The environments looked like classic Silent Hill locations—fog-covered streets, decaying buildings, and strange imagery that raises more questions than answers.
While many horror games rely on jump scares, Townfall appears focused on tension and dread. If the final game can maintain that feeling throughout its runtime, horror fans could be in for something special.
ILL Might Be the Most Disturbing Game Shown
If there was one trailer that genuinely made me uncomfortable, it was ILL.
The upcoming survival horror title showcased grotesque creatures, disturbing body horror, and some incredibly realistic visuals. The game immediately gave off strong Resident Evil vibes, but with an even heavier emphasis on psychological horror and unsettling imagery.
What impressed me most was the level of detail. Enemy animations looked incredibly lifelike, environments felt believable, and every encounter seemed designed to make players feel vulnerable.
The game also appears to be heavily story-driven, which should help separate it from many other horror titles currently in development.
ILL is currently targeting a 2027 release window, and based on this showing alone, it's firmly on my radar.
Control: Resonant Looks Every Bit as Strange and Wonderful as the Original
Few games have built the kind of passionate fanbase that Control has, so expectations for a sequel were incredibly high.
Thankfully, Control: Resonant appears ready to deliver.
The trailer showcased the same reality-bending environments, supernatural powers, and mind-bending visual effects that made the original so memorable. Entire rooms shifted shape, objects floated through the air, and combat looked even more chaotic than before.
Remedy has always excelled at creating unique worlds, and Resonant seems poised to continue that tradition. The visuals were particularly impressive, blending photorealistic environments with impossible architectural designs and supernatural phenomena.
If the original Control was one of the most creative games of its generation, Resonant looks ready to push those ideas even further.
The game launches September 24, 2026.
The Return of Until Dawn
Supermassive Games revealed Until Dawn 2, introducing a new cast of characters and a fresh horror scenario.
The premise immediately caught my attention. A group of friends who make a living staging fake ghost-hunting content decide to explore an abandoned island, only to discover that the horrors lurking there are very real.
It's a clever setup that feels modern while still fitting perfectly within the Until Dawn formula.
The trailer suggested players can once again expect branching choices, life-or-death consequences, and multiple possible outcomes. The isolated island setting also seems like the perfect backdrop for the series' signature tension.
While we still need to see more gameplay, the concept alone has me excited to learn more.
God of War's Next Chapter Was the Showcase's Biggest Surprise
The longest and perhaps most impressive segment of the entire State of Play focused on the future of God of War.
Sony devoted more than twenty minutes to gameplay and story details, revealing a new perspective on the franchise that few people expected.
Rather than continuing directly through Kratos, this new entry follows Faye and explores events surrounding her funeral during the timeline of God of War (2018). It's a fascinating direction that allows players to experience the world through an entirely different lens.
Naturally, Faye won't play exactly like Kratos. The gameplay showcased new abilities, new powers, and a different approach to combat that emphasizes speed, mobility, and unique magical attacks.
What stood out most was how respectfully the developers seem to be expanding the universe. Instead of simply repeating the formula, they're using a new protagonist to explore stories and perspectives that fans have only heard about previously.
While Kratos' raw brutality may be absent, the footage suggested Faye will bring plenty of excitement and depth of her own.
If the gameplay shown is representative of the final product, this could become one of the most interesting entries in the franchise to date.
Final Thoughts
Sony's June 2026 State of Play delivered exactly what fans were hoping for: major first-party announcements, exciting third-party reveals, and several genuine surprises.
Marvel's Wolverine and the new God of War project were the clear standouts for me, but Control: Resonant, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, ILL, Until Dawn 2, and Silent Hill: Townfall all made strong impressions as well.
PlayStation players have a lot to look forward to over the next eighteen months.
